Povidone

Povidone K30 (PVP K30) is a water-soluble polymer used as a tablet binder in wet granulation, a solubiliser and a film former, supplied to Ph. Eur./USP-NF.

Povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone) dissolves readily in water and in alcohols. In wet granulation it is dissolved in the granulating liquid at about 2–5% of the tablet weight and acts as the glue that turns fine powder into strong, free-flowing granules.

The K-value indicates its molecular weight and viscosity; K30 is the standard binder grade. Povidone also improves the solubility of poorly soluble APIs, stabilises suspensions and is the base for povidone-iodine antiseptics. Peroxide content is controlled because peroxides can oxidise sensitive APIs.

Povidone — frequently asked

The K-value is a measure of povidone's molecular weight derived from its solution viscosity. K30 has a K-value of 27.0–32.4 and is the standard grade for tablet binding. Higher grades such as K90 are more viscous.

Povidone K30 is typically used at about 2–5% of the tablet weight, dissolved in water or alcohol as the granulating fluid.

Povidone can contain peroxides that oxidise sensitive APIs. Pharmacopoeial limits cap peroxides at 400 ppm, and lower-peroxide grades are available for sensitive formulations.

Yes. Chemtrade manufactures and exports Povidone (CAS 9003-39-8) from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in Pharma. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.

Every shipment of Povidone from Chemtrade includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
