Sodium Silicate

Sodium Silicate (water glass) is used as a flotation depressant and dispersant in mining, and as a binder, detergent builder and silica raw material.

Sodium silicate is a glass of silica and soda, sold as a viscous solution or as solid lumps. Its properties are set by the weight ratio of SiO₂ to Na₂O: lower ratios are more alkaline and more soluble, higher ratios are more 'neutral' and bind more strongly.

In flotation it depresses silicate gangue minerals and disperses slimes, which sharpens separation in fluorite, phosphate, scheelite and other non-sulphide circuits. In industry it binds foundry sand and corrugated board, builds detergents, stabilises soil and is the starting material for silica gel and precipitated silica.

  • Binder for foundry moulds (CO₂ process)
  • Soil stabilisation and grouting
  • Raw material for silica gel and precipitated silica

Storage & handling

Liquid grades are alkaline and should be kept in closed containers to stop a skin forming. Protect from freezing. Lumps are dissolved under pressure with steam.

Sodium Silicate — frequently asked

Flotation commonly uses sodium silicate with a weight ratio of about 2.4 to 3.3. Higher-ratio grades are stronger gangue depressants; the right ratio and dose are confirmed by laboratory flotation tests on the ore.

Lumps are much cheaper to ship because they contain no water, but they need a pressure dissolver with steam. Liquid sodium silicate is ready to use and suits plants without dissolving equipment.

Sodium silicate solutions are alkaline and irritating to skin and eyes, with higher-alkalinity (low-ratio) grades being more corrosive. Most liquid grades are not regulated as dangerous goods for sea freight, but goggles and gloves should be worn.
