Sulphuric Acid

Sulphuric Acid (98%) is the most produced industrial chemical, used for fertilisers, metal leaching, steel pickling, chemical manufacture and pH control.

Concentrated sulphuric acid, H₂SO₄, is made by the contact process from sulphur or smelter gases. At 98% it is a dense, oily liquid that is strongly acidic, strongly dehydrating and releases large amounts of heat on dilution.

More than half of the world's sulphuric acid goes into phosphate fertilisers. The rest is used to leach copper, nickel and uranium ores, pickle steel, make alum, ferric sulphate and other sulphates, regenerate ion-exchange resins and neutralise alkaline effluent. Battery-grade acid is a separate, high-purity grade.

Storage & handling

Concentrated acid (above about 93%) can be stored in carbon steel; dilute acid cannot. It is hygroscopic and reacts violently with water. Ships as UN 1830, Class 8.

Sulphuric Acid — frequently asked

Always add sulphuric acid slowly to water, never water to acid, with constant stirring and cooling. Dilution releases enough heat to boil water and spatter acid, so full face and body protection are essential.

Yes. At concentrations above about 93%, sulphuric acid forms a protective iron sulphate layer on carbon steel. Diluted acid attacks steel rapidly, so moisture must be kept out of steel tanks.

Yes. Sulphuric acid ships as UN 1830, Class 8 (corrosive), Packing Group II, in UN-approved packaging or ISO tanks.

Yes. Chemtrade manufactures and exports Sulphuric Acid (CAS 7664-93-9) from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in Basic Industrial Chemicals. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.

Every shipment of Sulphuric Acid from Chemtrade includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
