Emulsifiers & thickeners

Emulsifiers and thickeners for personal care — fatty alcohols, esters, polysorbates, carbomers and polymers that build the texture and stability of creams, lotions and gels.

Creams and lotions are emulsions of oil and water that would separate without help. Emulsifiers such as glyceryl stearate, PEG stearates and polysorbates hold the two phases together, while fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alcohol build body and stability. The balance between them is chosen using the HLB (hydrophile–lipophile balance) of the oil phase.

Thickeners shape texture and stop products separating on the shelf. Carbomers give crystal-clear gels once neutralised; acrylates copolymers suspend beads and pearls in shampoos; cellulose ethers and natural gums thicken water phases. Complete emulsifier systems and custom bases can be toll manufactured to a customer's formulation.

Emulsifiers & thickeners — frequently asked

Emulsifier selection starts with the required HLB of the oil phase, the desired texture and the type of emulsion (oil-in-water or water-in-oil). A blend of a low-HLB and a high-HLB emulsifier is normally used to match it.

Carbomer is acidic and only partly swollen in water. Neutralising it with an alkali such as sodium hydroxide or triethanolamine to around pH 6–7 uncoils the polymer, producing the high viscosity and clarity of a gel.
