Propylene Glycol

Propylene Glycol is a versatile humectant, solvent and carrier for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food, and an antifreeze and resin raw material in industrial grade.

Propylene glycol (1,2-propanediol) is a clear, odourless, slightly sweet liquid that mixes with water and many organic solvents. In personal care it acts as a humectant and carrier; in pharmaceuticals it is a solvent for oral, topical and some injectable products; in food it carries flavours and colours.

Industrial grade goes into unsaturated polyester resins, de-icing fluids and food-safe antifreeze and heat-transfer fluids, where it replaces more toxic ethylene glycol. USP grade is tested for purity and for diethylene and ethylene glycol contamination.

Propylene Glycol — frequently asked

USP propylene glycol meets the United States Pharmacopeia for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food, including tests for diethylene and ethylene glycol. Industrial grade is used for resins, antifreeze and de-icing, where pharmacopoeial testing is not required.

Glycerine is a stronger humectant with a richer, slightly tacky feel. Propylene glycol is lighter, less sticky, a better solvent for many actives and fragrances, and helps penetration. Many formulas use both.

Yes. Industrial propylene glycol is used in heat-transfer and antifreeze fluids, especially in food and beverage plants where its low toxicity is an advantage over ethylene glycol.

Yes. Chemtrade manufactures and exports Propylene Glycol (CAS 57-55-6) from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in Personal Care & Home Care. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.
