Aluminium Sulphate
Aluminium Sulphate (alum) is the most widely used water treatment coagulant and a long-established sizing chemical in paper making, supplied in ferric and non-ferric grades.
Aluminium sulphate dissolves to release aluminium ions that hydrolyse into aluminium hydroxide floc, trapping turbidity, colour and bacteria so they can be settled and filtered out. It is inexpensive, well understood and approved for potable water almost everywhere, which is why so many municipal plants are designed around it.
Two grades cover most demand. Non-ferric alum, with very low iron, is used for drinking water and for paper, where iron would discolour the sheet. Ferric alum carries more iron and is a lower-cost choice for effluent and industrial water. Both are available as lumps, kibbled granules or powder to suit the plant's dissolving equipment.

Aluminium Sulphate — frequently asked
Non-ferric aluminium sulphate has a very low iron content and is used where iron would cause colour — potable water and paper making. Ferric alum contains more iron, costs less and is suited to effluent and industrial water treatment.
Often, yes. Aluminium sulphate consumes alkalinity as it hydrolyses, so soft or low-alkalinity water may need lime or soda ash to keep the pH in alum's effective range of roughly 6 to 7.5. PAC is an alternative where this is a recurring problem.
Kibbled alum suits most dissolving tanks and dissolves steadily without dust. Powder dissolves fastest and is preferred for small plants and dry feeders. Lumps are the lowest-cost form for large plants with dedicated dissolvers.
