Poly Aluminium Chloride

Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) is a pre-hydrolysed inorganic coagulant used to clarify drinking water and treat industrial effluent, working faster and across a wider pH range than alum.

PAC is a polymerised form of aluminium chloride in which part of the chloride has already been replaced by hydroxide. That pre-hydrolysis — expressed as basicity — is what makes it work: the aluminium arrives already in charged polymeric species, so it destabilises colloids almost instantly, forms dense, fast-settling floc and consumes far less of the water's natural alkalinity than aluminium sulphate.

In practice this means lower doses, a working pH window of roughly 5 to 9, less sludge and lower residual aluminium in the treated water. It is supplied as a yellow spray-dried powder with around 30% Al₂O₃, which suits long export routes, or as a liquid at 10% or 17% Al₂O₃ for plants that dose directly from tank.

  • Potable water clarification and turbidity removal
  • Colour removal from textile and dye-house effluent
  • Phosphate reduction in municipal sewage
  • Retention and sizing aid in paper mills
  • Oily and emulsified wastewater treatment
  • Coagulation ahead of sand filters and UF/RO pre-treatment

Packing options

  • 25 kg PE-lined bags (powder)
  • 1,000 kg jumbo bags (powder)
  • 250 kg HDPE drums (liquid)

Storage & handling

Powder is hygroscopic: keep bags sealed, off the floor and away from humidity. Liquid PAC is mildly acidic and corrosive to mild steel — store in HDPE or FRP tanks and use within about six months.

Poly Aluminium Chloride — frequently asked

Poly Aluminium Chloride usually works at a lower dose than aluminium sulphate, across a wider pH range (about 5–9), consumes less alkalinity, settles faster and leaves less sludge and lower residual aluminium. Alum is cheaper per kilogram, but PAC is often cheaper per cubic metre of water treated.

High-basicity PAC (around 70% and above) performs best on low-turbidity and cold water and gives the lowest residual aluminium. Medium-basicity grades handle high-turbidity raw water and effluent well. A jar test on your own water is the reliable way to decide, and samples are available for that purpose.

Powder carries roughly three times the Al₂O₃ per kilogram shipped and keeps for a year or more when dry, so it is the economical choice for export. Liquid PAC avoids make-up tanks and dissolving, and suits plants close to the point of production with direct dosing.
