Calcium Hypochlorite

Calcium Hypochlorite is a solid chlorine disinfectant with 65–70% available chlorine, supplied as granules or tablets for pool sanitation, drinking water and sanitation.

Calcium hypochlorite, Ca(OCl)₂, is the most concentrated common source of chlorine that can be handled as a solid. Granules dissolve quickly for shock treatment; tablets dissolve slowly in feeders and floaters for continuous dosing. Because it is dry, it holds its strength far better than liquid bleach, which makes it the default disinfectant for export, remote communities and emergency water supply.

It is also a strong oxidiser, and that drives how it must be handled. It must be kept away from acids, organic material, oils and — critically — chlorinated isocyanurates such as trichlor tablets, as mixing can cause fire or explosion. Shipping lines treat it as Class 5.1 cargo with special stowage, so bookings are made only with carriers that accept it.

Calcium Hypochlorite — frequently asked

Granules dissolve within minutes and are used for shock chlorination and batch dosing. Tablets dissolve slowly in erosion feeders or floaters and maintain a steady chlorine level, which suits pools and small water systems without operators on site.

Calcium hypochlorite is an oxidiser that can decompose violently if overheated or contaminated, so shipping lines apply strict stowage and temperature rules and some refuse it entirely. Shipments are booked only with lines that accept the cargo, with the full dangerous goods declaration.

Yes. It is widely used to chlorinate rural, emergency and small community supplies. It should be dissolved and dosed to give the residual free chlorine required by the local drinking water standard.
