Cosmetic Lakes & pigments

Cosmetic lakes and pigments are colour additives for lipsticks, eye shadows, nail lacquers and other make-up, supplied to cosmetic-grade purity specifications.

Lakes are water-soluble dyes made insoluble by precipitating them onto a substrate, usually aluminium hydroxide. The result is a pigment that colours without bleeding, ideal for lipsticks, pressed powders and nail lacquers. Cosmetic pigments also include iron oxides, titanium dioxide, ultramarines and chromium oxides.

In cosmetics, colour is a regulated ingredient. Each colourant must be permitted in the destination market and for the intended area of use, and must meet strict limits on lead, arsenic, mercury and other impurities. Documentation is confirmed against the destination regulation for each product before the order.
