Disperse Dyes
Disperse Dyes are the dye class for polyester, applied by high-temperature or thermosol dyeing and used in sublimation printing, in low, medium and high energy ranges.
Polyester has no ionic sites, so it cannot be dyed with water-soluble dyes. Disperse dyes are tiny, almost insoluble molecules milled to sub-micron size and kept in suspension with dispersants. At around 130 °C under pressure the fibre opens up and the dye dissolves into it, becoming locked in as the fibre cools.
Disperse dyes are grouped by energy level. Low-energy (E type) dyes dye quickly at lower temperatures but are less resistant to sublimation. High-energy (S type) dyes need more heat but withstand heat-setting, pleating and thermosol processes. Disperse dyes are also the basis of sublimation transfer printing on polyester.

Disperse Dyes — frequently asked
Low-energy (E type) disperse dyes dye quickly and level well but have low sublimation fastness. High-energy (S type) dyes need higher dyeing temperatures but resist sublimation during heat-setting and thermosol processes. Medium-energy (SE type) dyes balance the two.
Reduction clearing with sodium hydrosulphite and caustic soda removes loose dye from the polyester surface. Without it, dark shades show poor rub and wash fastness and may stain other fabrics.
Yes. Selected disperse dyes with suitable sublimation properties are used in sublimation and transfer printing inks, which transfer from paper into polyester under heat and pressure.
