Fixatives & musks
Fixatives and musks are base-note fragrance materials that add warmth and long-lasting character, used in fine fragrance, detergents, soaps and air care.
Fixatives are low-volatility materials that slow the evaporation of lighter notes and anchor a fragrance so it lasts on skin, fabric or in the air. They include benzyl benzoate and benzyl salicylate, amber materials, and resinoids such as benzoin and labdanum.
Musks give clean, soft, sensual base notes. Polycyclic musks such as HHCB are prized in detergents and softeners because they cling to fabric, while macrocyclic musks such as ethylene brassylate are favoured for their better biodegradability. Older nitro musks are banned or heavily restricted in many markets.

Fixatives & musks — frequently asked
Polycyclic musks such as HHCB are economical and very substantive on fabric. Macrocyclic musks such as ethylene brassylate are more biodegradable and smell closer to natural musk, so they are increasingly preferred.
Nitro musks such as musk xylene and musk ketone are banned or heavily restricted in many markets because of safety and environmental concerns. Polycyclic and macrocyclic musks have replaced them.
A fixative has low volatility and slows the evaporation of more volatile fragrance materials, so the scent lasts longer and changes more gradually over time.
