CAS 89-78-1
Menthol
Menthol crystals (BP/USP) give a strong cooling, minty effect in oral care, confectionery, pharmaceuticals and personal care.
Menthol is the compound responsible for the cooling sensation of mint. It activates the same nerve receptors that sense cold. India is the world's largest producer of natural L-menthol, crystallised from the oil of Mentha arvensis (corn mint), mainly in Uttar Pradesh. Synthetic racemic (DL) menthol is also produced.
Natural L-menthol (CAS 2216-51-5) gives the strongest cooling and cleanest minty odour; DL-menthol (CAS 89-78-1) is used where cost matters more. Pharmacopoeial grades are used in balms, cough drops and topical analgesics, and food grades in confectionery and chewing gum.
