Titanium Dioxide
Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂) is the leading white pigment, giving opacity and brightness to paints, plastics and pharmaceutical coatings, in rutile and anatase grades.
Titanium dioxide scatters visible light more strongly than any other white pigment because of its very high refractive index. A small amount gives paints, plastics, paper and tablet coatings their whiteness and hiding power. It exists in two commercial crystal forms: rutile, which is more opaque and much more durable outdoors, and anatase, which is softer and bluer in tone.
Rutile grades are surface-treated with alumina, silica or organics to improve weathering and dispersion, and dominate paints and plastics such as PVC profiles and masterbatches. Anatase grades are used in paper, fibres, ceramics and as a pharmacopoeial-grade opacifier for tablet coatings and capsules. Note that the EU no longer permits titanium dioxide as a food additive, so destination rules should be checked for ingestible uses.

Titanium Dioxide — frequently asked
Rutile titanium dioxide has higher opacity and much better outdoor durability, so it is used in exterior paints and plastics. Anatase is softer, less abrasive and slightly bluer, and is used in paper, fibres, ceramics and pharmaceutical coatings.
Surface treatment with alumina, silica or organic agents reduces the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂, which would otherwise degrade the paint or plastic binder outdoors. It also improves dispersion and compatibility with the binder.
Yes. Pharmacopoeial-grade titanium dioxide is supplied for tablet and capsule coatings. Regulatory status differs by country — the EU has removed it as a food additive — so permitted use in the destination market should be confirmed.
Yes. Chemtrade manufactures and exports Titanium Dioxide (CAS 13463-67-7) from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in Paints, Inks & Coatings, Pharma, Plastic & Rubber. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.
Every shipment of Titanium Dioxide from Chemtrade includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
