Calcium Zinc Stabiliser
Calcium Zinc Stabiliser is a lead-free heat stabiliser for PVC pipes, profiles, cables, films and toys, supplied as one-pack powder and liquid systems.
PVC degrades when heated during processing, releasing hydrochloric acid and turning yellow, then brown. Heat stabilisers prevent this. Lead stabilisers were the traditional choice but are being phased out worldwide; calcium-zinc systems are the main non-toxic replacement.
One-pack calcium-zinc stabilisers combine the metal soaps with co-stabilisers and lubricants in a single product, simplifying dosing for pipe, profile and cable makers. Liquid calcium-zinc grades are used in flexible PVC such as films, toys and medical tubing. Switching from lead normally needs some reformulation of lubricant balance.

Calcium Zinc Stabiliser — frequently asked
Lead stabilisers are toxic and are restricted or banned in an increasing number of countries, particularly for drinking water pipes and consumer products. Calcium-zinc stabilisers provide lead-free heat stability for the same applications.
Usually some adjustment is needed, mainly to the lubricant balance and processing temperatures. Calcium-zinc systems are typically trialled at the recommended dosage and fine-tuned for fusion and early colour.
Zinc burning is a sudden blackening of PVC caused by zinc chloride formed during processing. Well-balanced calcium-zinc stabilisers include co-stabilisers that prevent it.
